Why can’t we just all get along?

Rodney King, for those who might not remember him, became famous for the horrific beating given him by the police after a roadside stop. A video of the beating went viral on the web. This kind of beating should not happen to anyone, let alone at the hands of the police but this terrible treatment is not the focus of today’s blog.

Rodney King was interviewed later on and spoke these words, “Why can’t we all just get along?” This phrase didn’t fit his situation then but it does fit the ‘Go along to get along’ mentality that is so prevalent inAmerica today; namely, ‘Tolerance!’

The Church is made up of people, some of whom bring in worldly attitudes. One of the most popular slogans today is “Judge Not!”  This slogan is associated with the passage from Gospel of Mathew; Mat 7:1 NASB  “Do not judge so that you will not be judged.

It is the most abused bible verse in modern times. The next few verses following the Matthew 7:1 verse explain it in very different terms than the way that the world uses it.

The verse is used as baseball bat to figuratively beat Christians over the head. It is used to justify all manner of bad behavior. Christians use it when their favorite ‘Big Name TV Preacher’ (BNTVP) does something wrong and discerning people call him on the carpet for it.

‘Do not judge’ the BNTVP says, as he tries to get the focus off of himself. His loyal fans do the same thing.

Well meaning Christians say that we should go to the BNTVP privately and tell him of his error. This never works! I have not seen a single BNTVP change his evil ways when told privately. I have never seen a BNTVP change his evil ways when told about them publicly either!

People Want What They Want

Sports team idolatry is at work in situations like this. Woe to him who speaks badly of a person’s favorite ‘Superstar’! Unfortunately, many people in the modern day Church have one or more ‘Superstar’ heroes! They are victims of Satan’s WMD’s, Weapons of Mass Distraction!

If we focus on our favorite ‘Superstar’ then we are not focusing on Jesus Christ and we will eventually be so distracted that we place ourselves in danger of deception.

The bible speaks very clearly about discernment. We are told to contend earnestly for the faith. We cannot do that if we cower in the face of wrong doing, all in the name of tolerance; the Rodney King mentality not withstanding!

1Ti 4:1 NASB  But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons,

2Ti 4:3-4 NASB  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires,  (4)  and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.

The middle verse in the bible is Psalm 118.8

There is the same number of verses before it as there are after it. The entire bible is balanced on this pivot point! See if you agree with what it says.

Psa 118:8 NASB  It is better to take refuge in the LORD Than to trust in man.
